Spring Clean Your Life This Spring - 5 tips to get you out of the winter slump and kick-start your health and fitness journey
Spring has arrived and the change in seasons is a great time to reset, set some new goals and reassess some of the habits you may have dropped (or picked up!), over the cooler months. If you’re anything like us, winter has got you in a bit of a rut, so here are 5 tips that we’ll be implementing to restart our wellness journey and prepare for summer.
1. Revamp your fitness routine and start moving again.
Lets face it, exercising in winter is tough. It gets light late, dark early and it is so darn easy to do nothing but Netflix and chill with your favourite takeaway in the evenings.
Whether you’re a ‘shredding for summer’ type or someone who just wants to make the most of the nicer weather to go for a walk outside, Spring is a great time to start moving again. Not only will you be making the most of that gym membership you’ve paid for and barely used all winter, you’ll also get that endorphin hit which, quite frankly, makes everyone a nicer person.
Take a look at your training routine and figure out which type of exercise you enjoy the most and which workouts give you the best results. From here you’ll have more of an idea of what to include in your training routine to ensure you are both enjoying your workouts and seeing results. This could be a mix of HIIT, resistance training, yoga or playing a team sport. If you are enjoying your workouts and seeing results from them, you are more likely to stick at it!
2. Set new goals or targets to help you stay motivated
Once you have jumped back aboard the health and fitness bandwagon, staying motivated is easy... for the first couple of days. However motivation quickly subsides because picking up new habits, or reestablishing old ones, can be tough.
One of the easiest ways to maintain the drive to workout consistently is if you set yourself some realistic and achievable goals or targets. These goals could be a distance you want to run, a certain weight you want to lift or a percentage of body fat you want to lose. Having a goal, referring back to it often and visualising yourself completing it will all help you stay on track and reach it faster.
3. Replace bad habits with good ones
Habits, good or bad, they can define us. When it comes to your health and fitness habits, Spring is the perfect time to evaluate the habits and behaviours which either help or hinder you reaching your goals.
One of the easiest ways to ditch the bad habits is to replace them with healthy choices. For example, if you’re a notorious 3pm chocolate snacker, why not try a piece of fruit or some nuts and seeds instead. No, it’s not going to satisfy the craving at first, but at least you will get satisfaction out of knowing you’re making a healthier choice and you’re still on track to smash those goals.
4. Find an accountability buddy
Two is always better than one, right? There have been plenty of studies to show that telling someone else about your goals, or having someone to keep you accountable, not only makes you more likely to reach them, but will also help get you there faster.
In one study, participants were 65% more likely to reach a goal, if they told someone else about it and the rate of success of actually achieving that goal, was a massive 95% when they committed to meeting up in person.
So find someone to keep you accountable! It could be your bestie, your neighbour or your mum's boyfriends sisters daughter. It doesn’t matter, just find that person!
5. Clean up your diet
You can’t out train a bad diet! No amount of crunches will give you abs if you’re still getting takeaways 4 nights a week.
Keeping your diet clean can arguably be one of the toughest parts of losing weight and with the majority of convenience foods on the market being unhealthy options, it’s not hard to see why. Being organised and meal prepping is a game changer here and will ensure you have a healthy meal or snack on hand so you’re not tempted to stop by the drive through on the way home from a busy day at work.
While meal prepping is a vital part of any healthy lifestyle, planning every one of your meals for the week requires a lot of time, forward thinking and doesn’t take into account what you might actually feel like eating at the time.
We know spending hours in the kitchen isn’t for everyone, so we have the Muscle Fuel chefs doing the hard work for us. With meals that are nutritionally balanced, packed with protein and delivered to your door, having a healthy meal on hand is so easy.
